GLOBAL Seasonal Outlooks
At long last we have discovered a way to provide seasonal, 3-month temperature and precipitation outlooks for the SOS! We will continue using these global datasets in the future, replacing the U.S.-only maps. The data is provided by the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI). The IRI was established as a cooperative agreement between NOAA’s Climate Program Office and Columbia University. It is part of The Earth Institute, Columbia University. The data for these maps are constructed primarily from several climate models, with some minor tweaks by climatologists. Continue reading

March 2013 Climate Digest
Each month, we will provide information regarding the previous month’s climate. Overall, preliminary data analysis suggests that March 2013 was the 10th warmest on record (since 1880), tied with 2006. Major stories include a chilly United States, warmer than normal Australia, and the continued absence of El Niño or La Niña. Continue reading
February 2013 Climate Digest
Each month, we will provide information regarding the previous month’s climate. Overall, preliminary data analysis suggests that February 2013 was the 9th warmest on record (since 1880), tied with 2003. Major stories include a Nor’easter, warmer than normal summer for Australia, and above average snow cover for Eurasia and North America. Continue reading
